Pioneers Behind Balmurti’s Legacy
The Roots That Still Bloom: Pioneers Behind Balmurti’s Legacy
In a fast-changing world where childhood is increasingly boxed into academic rubrics and performance charts, Balmurti stands apart a quiet, steadfast voice for imagination, innocence, and the unmeasurable beauty of growth. But behind its poetic presence lies a powerful lineage of educators, visionaries, and reformers who dared to reimagine how children should be nurtured not drilled.
This is the story of Balmurti’s founding minds. And this is how their dreams still echo in every story, every drawing, every gentle message this magazine carries forward.

Shri Lalchandbhai Vora – The Seed Sower
It all began in Bagasara, Gujarat, with a man who believed that education must touch the heart before it reaches the mind. Shri Lalchandbhai Vora, founder of Bal Kelavani Mandir, sowed the first seed of Balmurti in 1981. Inspired by his lifelong service to the cause of accessible and ethical education, he envisioned a magazine not to instruct, but to ignite.
His idea wasn’t just to produce a publication it was to create a movement of value-based child development, rooted in Indian culture and compassion. January 26, 1981, marked the birth of Balmurti, not coincidentally on Republic Day, symbolizing a new republic for young minds.

Shri Pravinbhai Shah – The First Voice
If Shri Vora laid the foundation, it was Shri Pravinbhai Shah who shaped the voice of Balmurti as its first editor. A gifted communicator, he believed children must never be “taught” morals they must discover them, on their own terms. His editorials and curations allowed stories to breathe, characters to stumble, and conclusions to remain open-ended.
His tenure defined the magazine’s early rhythm one that valued emotional intelligence over instruction, exploration over expertise.

Late Shri Jayantbhai Shukla – The Torchbearer in Transition
After Balmurti paused its publication briefly in the early 1990s, Late Shri Jayantbhai Shukla became the quiet force behind its revival. A founding member of Nutan Bal Shikshan Sangh, Vadodara, he believed that the child’s world was sacred and that their growth must be celebrated, not standardized.
It was under his gentle yet determined leadership that Balmurti found its new home with Nutan Bal Shikshan Sangh. He introduced events like “Chalo Kariye Umang, Jayant Dada Ne Sang”, which carried forward the magazine’s spirit through school programs, village workshops, and community celebrations focused on holistic child development.
His influence lives on in every Matru Sabha, every Summer Camp, every Bal Mela where children are not just learning they are being loved into growth.
The Guiding Lights: Montessori, Modak & Gijubhai
Beyond Balmurti’s immediate team, its philosophical roots draw from a global and national trifecta of early childhood education pioneers:
Dr. Maria Montessori, who taught us that children are natural learners when given freedom within structure.

Padma Bhushan Tarabai Modak, who “Indianized” Montessori’s methods to create low-cost, rural-friendly Balwadis and Anganwadis.

Shri Gijubhai Badheka, the “Brahma of Children’s Literature,” whose Divaswapna philosophy of storytelling, play, and love-centered education remains at the heart of Balmurti’s ethos.

Their influence, as documented in both global education research and the foundational principles of Nutan Bal Shikshan Sangh, continues to shape Balmurti’s child-centric, pressure-free philosophy.
Nutan Bal Shikshan Sangh – The Sustaining Force
Since officially registering in 1992–93, Nutan Bal Shikshan Sangh, Vadodara, has served as the institutional soul of Balmurti. With activities across over 800 villages, training for 44,000+ teachers, and direct impact on over 130,000 children and parents, the Sangh embodies the living spirit of the magazine.
Its programs from Vali Sabhas to Pra Shikshan Shibirs, from Bal Sabha to Creative Exhibitions are not just events. They are living classrooms, ensuring Balmurti is more than words on a page it is action, presence, and transformation.
Unified Growth Foundation – The Bridge to a New Era
Carrying forward the values of Balmurti into the digital and global space is the Unified Growth Foundation (UGF)a purpose-driven, not-for-profit initiative committed to empowering education, entrepreneurship, and ethical leadership across generations. With a deep belief in nurturing potential over performance, UGF took up the mantle of reviving Balmurti in a format fit for the 21st century. Under the stewardship of Mr. Nilesh Shukla, the Foundation has not only preserved the soul of Balmurti but also expanded its reach through digital storytelling, audio-visual content, and global distribution, ensuring that the joy of childhood learning transcends boundaries linguistic, geographic, or generational.
Balmurti Online – The Next Chapter
Launched during the COVID-19 pandemic under the leadership of Mr. Nilesh Shukla and the Unified Growth Foundation, Balmurti Online brought this legacy into the digital age. Now available in both Gujarati and English, with podcasts, videos, and global distribution, Balmurti continues to carry forward its quiet revolution making sure that even in a noisy digital world, the child’s voice is still heard.
In Closing: A Legacy That Listens
The beauty of Balmurti lies in what it chooses not to do. It doesn’t impose lessons. It doesn’t rank readers. It doesn’t rush growth.
Instead, it whispers wisdom. It honors questions. It celebrates the sacred slowness of childhood.
Because the pioneers who shaped Balmurti knew: the best education is the one that listens before it speaks.
